Bipin Rawat: News

General Bipin Rawat is a former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of India as of 2021. Son of Lt. Gen. Laxman Singh Rawat, he attended the NDA, Khadakwasla, and IMA, Dehradun, later getting commissioned into the 5th Battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1978. Rawat is known for his experience in counter-insurgency and high-altitude operations. He has served in the Eastern Command along the Line of Actual Control and was involved in India's 1986-87 Sumdorong Chu standoff with China along the McMahon Line. He oversaw the 2015 military strikes against hostile militants in Myanmar and the 2016 surgical strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Rawat is decorated with several military honors, including the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM) and Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), among others. He served as the COAS from 2016 to 2019, as Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) in 2019, and as the first CDS of India from 2020.
